(Cairo) A seguito del rifiuto Egiziano di consentire ai partecipanti alla Gaza Freedom March di entrare a Gaza, gli oltre 1.300 attivisti per la pace e la giustizia sono partiti a piedi. ...
Nonostante i blocchi della polizia predisposti al Cairo con lo scopo di recintare i dimostranti e impedire loro di manifestare solidarietà con il popolo Palestinese, gli internazionali stanno spiegando i loro stendardi e invitano tutti i pacifisti del mondo di sostenerli e chiedere la fine dell’assedio di Gaza.
L’offerta Egiziana di lasciar entrare a Gaza solo 100 dei 1.400 partecipanti alla Marcia, è stata ritenuta dagli organizzatori della Marcia insufficiente e deliberatamente intenzionata a dividere. Nel frattempo, il Ministro degli Esteri Egiziano ha cercato di far passare questa offerta last-minute come espressione di buona intenzione nei confronti dei Palestinesi per isolare i “provocatori”. La Gaza Freedom March ha rifiutato categoricamente queste affermazioni. Gli attivisti sono al Cairo perché il governo Egiziano ha impedito loro di raggiungere Gaza. “Noi non vogliamo rimanere qui, Gaza è sempre stata la nostra destinazione finale”, afferma Max Ajl , partecipante alla Marcia.
Alcune persone hanno cercato di superare i blocchi della polizia e iniziare a marciare verso il punto di incontro a Tahreer Square al centro del Cairo. A loro si sono uniti Egiziani che volevano denunciare il ruolo del proprio governo nel sostenere l’assedio di Gaza. Le autorità hanno cercato di tenere separati gli internazionali dai locali. La polizia sta attaccando brutalmente i partecipanti , non violenti, alla Marcia. Molti poliziotti in borghese si sono infiltrati tra la folla e assaltano I partecipanti violentemente. “Sono stata sollevata dalla polizia Egiziana e sbattuta letteralmente contro le transenne” afferma Desiree Fairooz, una dimostrante. I partecipanti alla Marcia stanno cantando slogan di protesta e resistono ai tentativi di disperderli e giurano di rimanere nella piazza fino a quando non saranno autorizzati ad andare a Gaza. Lo striscione GFM è appeso ad un albero della piazza. Alcuni partecipanti alla Marcia stanno sanguinando e i celerini hanno distrutto le loro videocamere.
La Gaza Freedom March rappresenta persone da 43 nazioni con background diversi. Tra loro ci sono persone di ogni fede, leader di comunità, attivisti per la pace, dottori, artisti, studenti, politici, scrittori e molti altri. In comune hanno l’impegno alla nonviolenza e la determinazione a interrompere l’assedio di Gaza.
"L’Egitto ha provato in tutti i modi possibili ad isolarci e ad abbattere il nostro spirito” dicono gli organizzatori della Marcia. “Ma noi restiamo fedeli più che mai al nostro obiettivo di manifestare contro la tirannia e la repressione. Marceremo il più vicino possibile a Gaza, e se saremo fermati con la forza, chiederemo ai nostri sostenitori di protestare. Chiediamo a coloro che credono nella giustizia e nella pace ovunque siano nel mondo di sostenere le nostre iniziative per la libertà dei Palestinesi."
Tra i partecipanti c’è anche Alice Walker, scrittrice e vincitrice del Premio Pulitzer, Walden Bello , membro del Parlamento Filippino, Luisa Morgantini, ex membro del Palamento Europeo per l’Italia. Più di 20 partecipanti alla marcia, tra cui l’ 85enne sopravvissuta all’Olocausto, Hedy Epstein, hanno intrapreso uno sciopero della fame contro il pesante ostruzionismo Egiziano, oggi entrano nel quarto giorno.

INTERNATIONALS IN CAIRO SET OFF ON MARCH TO GAZA IN PROTEST OF SIEGE
(Cairo) Following Egypt's refusal to allow the Gaza Freedom Marchers to enter Gaza, the more than 1,300 peace-and-justice activists are setting out on foot. Despite police blockades set up throughout downtown Cairo in an attempt to pen the protesters in and prevent them from demonstrating in solidarity with Palestinians, the internationals are unfurling their banners and calling on supporters of peace around the world to join them to demand the end of the siege of Gaza.
Egypt's offer to allow 100 of the 1400 marchers to enter Gaza was denounced as insufficient and deliberately divisive by the organizers. Meanwhile, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs has sought to spin this last-minute offer as an act of goodwill for Palestinians and isolation of "troublemakers." The Gaza Freedom March categorically rejects these assertions. Activists are in Cairo because they are being prevented by the Egyptian government from reaching Gaza. "We do not wish to be here, Gaza has always been our final destination", said Max Ajl one of the marchers.
Some individuals managed to overcome the police barricades and began the march at the meeting point in Tahreer Square in downtown Cairo. They were joined by Egyptians who also wished to denounce the role of their government in sustaining the Gaza siege. The authorities have sought to separate international from the locals. The police is brutally attacking the nonviolent marchers. Many plain clothes police officers have infiltrated the crowds and are violently assaulting them. "I was lifted by the Egyptian police forces and literally tossed over the fence," said Desiree Fairooz, one of the protesters. Marchers are chanting and resisting the attempt to disperse them vowing to remain in the square until they are allowed to go to Gaza. The GFM banner is hanging up high in a tree in the square. Some marchers are bleeding and riot police destroyed their cameras.
The Gaza Freedom March represents people from 43 countries with a diversity of backgrounds. They include peoples of all faiths, community leaders, peace activists, doctors, artists, students, politicians, authors and many others. They share a commitment to nonviolence and a determination to break the siege of Gaza.
"Egypt has tried every way possible to isolate us and to crush our spirit," the march organizers say. "However, we remain as committed as we ever to standing up against tyranny and repression. We will march as far as we can towards Gaza, and if we are stopped by force, we will hold our ground in protest. We call on those committed to justice and peace everywhere to support our stand for freedom for Palestinians."
Among the participants are Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker, Filipino Parliament member Walden Bello and former European Parliamentarian Luisa Morgantini from Italy. More than 20 of the marchers, including 85-year-old Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, have launched a hunger strike against the Egyptian crack-down and are now entering their fourth day.##
